I really like how the *BABOK® v3 has redefined Business Analysis from the previous v2 version.
v3: The practice of enabling change in the context of an enterprise by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders.
v2: Set of tasks and techniques used to work as a liaison among stakeholders in order to understand the structure, policies, and operations of an organization, and to recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve its goals.
Note the change in the work from gathering and relaying information as a liaison to enabling change in an organization.
Why do I like this?
- For starters, the role of a liaison has become synonymous with "order taker". That is, it's seen merely as one who listens, records and regurgitates the desire of others, like a waiter taking your order at a restaurant. (Not to denigrate waiters, as I've seen many who go the extra mile to provide great customer service.) The perception is that little value is delivered, therefore "anyone can do it". Thus we hear some say "Oh, they're just high-paid secretaries", (as if that role exists anymore). Note how v2 focuses on tasks and techniques, where v3 stresses change enablement and value.
- Another reason I like this redefinition is that it's encouraging BAs to adopt what I've always thought of as a Business Consultant mentatlity. Business Consultants help organizations improve performance and efficiency. They analyze the business, create solutions and help the businesses meet their goals. They're usually a catalyst for meaningful & lasting change. This fits quite nicely into the BA framework as defined in the new BABOK® and, properly done, should deliver far more value than in the past.
